The Kernel Brewery Part 2: Pale Ales Chinook and Galaxy Topaz Stella

January 5, 2013

Chinook at 5.2 per cent abv. Bottled on 3.12.12 best before 3.2.13. Aroma is citrus and pine. Taste is bitter pine needles. Not as refreshing as Ahtanum Cascade Citra, some bitter citrus in there too but mostly pine. I think my single hop Chinook was actually “better” in a sense that I got more aroma out of the hop and not just resiny bitterness.

Galaxy Topaz Stella at 5.3 per cent abv. Bottled on 12.11.12 best before 12.3.13. Aroma is sweet tropical fruits, ripe mango, citrus. My word. There is bitterness to this beer but the first hit of a mouthful is so smooth. Then some oily pine in a delicate manner and the bitterness lingers on up on the roof of the mouth. The aftertaste is freshly squeezed grapefruit. Somehow a dainty beer – better watch out, this beer makes me want to wax lyrical but in brief, a very cunning beer.

The beers look identical and are absolutely crystal clear until the last centimetre of yeasty sediment going into the glass. Both were moderately carbonated.
