Brew #11: Smoked Porter

Sparged with 6 litres instead of the usual 4, OG was still 2 points above what BeerSmith  showed – same amount of work, 2 litres of more beer, you do the math! 6 litres and the wort level was almost up to the malt pipe so not much capacity to go over 6, but perhaps adding a few litres during the boil and seeing how well OG holds up. Plenty of space in the fermentor anyway.

Smoked some malt in the oven using those foil-bags containing alder wood chips meant for smoking fish etc at home (link here), got roasted a bit too.

Brew #10: Northdown Bitter

Bottled and party-kegged this session bitter today. Beer was very clear and nice coppery colour, perhaps the most “finished” I’ve had at bottling, just needs a wee bit of carbonation and it’s ready to go. Looks like I am doing a homebrew swop in January and this beer should showcase Speidel Braumeister very well, with better fermentation and yeast management who knows what can be achieved.

While I am writing this I am drinking the last drops from the FV, these Northdown hops are absolutely fantastic and it must be also that the new more open and loose hop bag DIY-thingy is doing a super job. Well chuffed!
